Unknown Facts In The World Of Leather -Crocodile Leather
Expensive
According to ISUIT, over 800 million crocodiles are raised in farms specifically for their skin every year. The skin of a crocodile can be transformed into leather and used just like cow leather.
Out of all the leather types in the world, crocodile only makes up around 1% of the total amount of the leather trade worldwide. With the supply low, this makes the skin of a crocodile a luxury and delicacy.
Imperfections are commonplace in the leather world. Often when talking about leather, cowhides are what is brought up. Cowhides can have bug bites, brands, or cuts that have healed up and scared. All these imperfections affect how much of the hide is used. The same goes for crocodile leather. They have different types of imperfections, but they are not immune to this issue. The more imperfections, the more depreciation of the leather will occur.
Fun Fact: According to ISUIT, snake, hippo, alligator, shark, elephant, ostrich, full-grain, and top-grain cow leather are some of the most expensive types of leather!
Real Crocodile VS. Printed Crocodile
Crocodile leather will have a softer feel and texture than its printed counterpart. It is softer than its counterpart and softer than most leathers.
The most exciting and appealing thing about real crocodile leather is that the skin between the scales is even softer than the rest. The change between the leather adds an extra dimension to the already stunning leather. Printed crocodile leather will not have a change in softness. It will all be the same consistency.
Another cool tidbit about the scales of the crocodile leather would be the scales themselves. Real authentic crocodile leather will not have the same sized scales, and there will be slight inconsistencies in the scales’ overall size. Each piece will have a different set of imperfections or natural markings. These markings add an extra layer of uniqueness to the leather.
Crocodile VS. Alligator
You can see the difference while looking at the two animals. When looking at the scales of a crocodile compared to an alligator, you will see the crocodile’s scales are less gritty and usually are smoother. A crocodile’s scales will often be more symmetrical rectangles.
Fun Fact: Did you know that alligators do not have pores?
